Some of you may remember that a right wing extremist bombed Oslo and went on a killing spree shortly after in July 2011.

That guy now claim he's being tortured in prison.. In a NORWEGIAN prison?? He says that he's getting the worst treatment possible, far more worse than in any other European country..

He also claims his a "Hero and the leader of the Norwegian Fascist Party"

I'm sorry, but.. He's a hero? A heroic fascist nonetheless..

Yeah.. sorry.. Political rant DONE... sorry Oppo..

Mind providing me with a link to this? My brother was talking about this earlier and I'd like to know a little more about it. Thanks

Or did you mean the whole thing? About the bombing and all that? If so, just google Oslo bombings 2011 or Anders Behring Breivk or Utøya shootings.

He keeps using that word... I don't think it means what he thinks it means. Also, if the poor thing is sufering this much in prison, he should probably try getting shipped to Brazil instead, as the current government seems to have massive boners for harboring terrori — I mean, political prisioners. It worked wonders for Cesare Battisti.

Why the NSWF tag? Usually people tag "politics" but there was nothing really controversial at all about this post.

Not me, I'm like the king of political rants. :p

But then again Brazil is the king of shitty decisions, like a roomate you're forced to live with who'll never get his act together and usually screws you up in the process.

He thinks he's being tortured because he can't promote his views to the media when he feels like it. For some reason he's got it into his mind that "the muslims" is in control in Europe, and that Europe and "the muslims" is in some sort of war.. He's a nutter... I kinda feel sorry for him.

Not to get technical but NSFW is only really needed for the the "girlie" posts that could get folks in trouble at work so really "politics" is fine. Totally up to you on how you want to tag but if someone goes looking for boobs and butts via the NSFW tag they will find this....so you may want to add some Norwegian hotties. :)

If the guy is a fascist, he's not on the right-wing. If he's on the right-wing, he's not a fascist. Fascists were socialists who, while allowing private ownership of property, believed in government control of private business and economic planning. Therefore they are left-wing.

That said it's a shame he's even alive to complain about his treatment. They should have been building the gallows while waiting for the jury (or judge, however it works in Norway) to come back with the verdict.

I should have explained that HE claims he's right-wing. As a socialist I know the difference ;)

That said, I don't believe in death as punishment, I'd rather have him rotting away in jail.

Pretty much the consensus in Norway actually, we don't much deal in revenge. We don't always forgive, but we don't use violence as punishment either. It would take forever to explain this, so I won't. But in short, this guy WANTED us to punish him with a death sentence, that would prove him right in his mind. So we did the opposite..

Why don't we ask some actual historical fascists whether they consider themselves "right-wing" or "left-wing"? People argue all the time about what the definition of the word "fascist" is, but strangely no one ever defines "fascist" by enumeration. That would be fine if there were a large, reasonably coherent body of fascist theory, comparable to the theory of socialism, or monarchism, or anarchism, or (little-r) republicanism. But there doesn't really exist such a body of fascist theory; basically there were just these two major 20th-century European national leaders who described themselves as "fascists" - Mussolini and Hitler - and they and their followers and admirers are pretty much the only fascists ever to exist in the world. I do believe that neither Mussolini or Hitler would have ever described their regimes as "left-wing" ones, nor would any of their followers.

Poor guy! Those mean Norwegians should send him to the U.S.A. We're really nice to our prison inmates here; we treat 'em terrific. In fact, I sometimes think, "Wow, I should commit some kind of crime so I too can go to jail! I hear it's great in there." The only problem is, most statutory violations necessarily involve immoral behavior, and no matter how much I envy our two or three million inmates and their plush lifestyle, I just can't bring myself to transgress the laws of morality.

"Why don't we ask some actual historical fascists whether they consider themselves "right-wing" or "left-wing"?"

Why bother? All we're demonstrating here is that the terms are pretty meaningless.

"I would have gladly pulled the lever to open the trap-door and watched him drop."

Do you actually mean that? Or do you think that even though he was obviously guilty and clearly evil, killing him would have some psychological impact on you? Do you think you'd really go straight off to sleep that night without a second thought for what you'd done?

The cost of keeping someone in prison for life is a small price to pay for not having to kill them. Plus, of course, if it's really a full-life term and they die in jail, then we've executed them in the slowest, most psychologically painful way possible.

Absolutely mean that. There should be a price to be paid for pure evil. One of the few roles I believe government has is to protect it's citizens and punish those who harm others. Letting someone spend their natural life in prison is not punishment commensurate with the crime of murdering 77 people innocents.

And yes, I think I'd have slept soundly afterward. At least I'd be willing to risk it.

"There should be a price to be paid for pure evil."

I have trouble distinguishing between evil and insanity, to be honest. Someone like Breivik seems much more like a nutter than something evil - which is not to say that what he did wasn't evil, but the man himself? He's just a man.

"One of the few roles I believe government has is to protect it's citizens and punish those who harm others."

What about rehabilitation? Not that it's going to happen in this specific case without some massive breakthrough in medical science or some such, but in general. Isn't the important thing to stop crime? Punishment has a deterrent effect, of course, but not a very strong one unless it's accompanied by levels of policing that are a bit too much. And the way we have things set up, it creates a vicious cycle where getting a conviction for one minor crime reduces someone's options so much that more crime seems a good plan.

When you look at why most criminals commit crimes, it seems to me that in fact most of them are motivated by things that it would be much easier and cheaper to deal with if we were a less short-sighted society. Stopping them committing crimes in the first place is the way to go, but except in the most extreme cases I think many criminals could be rehabilitated - where being rehabilitated would include genuinely wanting to make up for their previous crimes.

"Letting someone spend their natural life in prison is not punishment commensurate with the crime of murdering 77 people innocents."

To my mind putting someone in prison for life is a worse punishment than killing them. I'd certainly find it so in my case. The number of people who commit suicide in prison suggests that may well be true of many others, too. Mind you, the US system of psychologically torturing them on death row for years with the tantalising prospect of a reprieve might be worst of all - that's pretty warped, I have to say.

Really? National Socialist Peoples Workers Party. Notice the word socialist in the name. Does anyone disagree that socialists fall on the left of the political spectrum?

And even if we are just counting Europeans, what about Salazar and Franco? They weren't fascists? The political spectrum is easy to figure out. All the way to the left is totalitarianism. All the way to the right is anarchy. Where do you think fascism falls?

I have trouble differentiating between insanity and evil too. In my job I see many mentally troubled people, some down right insane. However the vast majority aren't violent. Anyone capable of slaughtering that many people must be insane on some level. The thing is, after someone has committed this kind of evil, I don't care if they are insane or not.

I've no interest in rehabilitation as I've seen first hand that it doesn't work. The purpose of prison should be punishment, period. It should be so miserable that no one ever wants to return.

One thing we do agree on is that allowing people to sit on death row for years, and sometimes decades, is a horrible system. Convictions should be reviewed quickly and, if the trial is found to have been fair, the sentence should be carried out immediately.
